Have you been told that adding a genuine GM factory backup camera is not possible after the vehicle has left the GM build plant? Only to be offered a license plate mounted alternative or some other form of Non-Factory camera option? These are good options; however we also know from years of experience that today’s customers are looking for factory equipment, and we have your GM factory backup camera solution right here. All you need to know is if you are pre-wired for the camera or not.
Please view the follow videos showing how to check if your vehicle is prewired, or not, for the GM Factory reverse camera. You will need to verify if you have the wires at the camera junction, located at the back of the truck by the spare tire.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Just because the wires are at the back of the truck, DOES NOT Mean the wires are up front. GM did build many vehicles with wires only ran partially through the truck. You will also need to check for the wires at the proper module for your particular infotainment system. Please see the info below for each Infotainment system:
IO4 / IO5 and IO6 Infotainment Systems
Access the HMI Module that sits behind the glove box (Video Shown Here). Check for the wires in slots 5 and 6 of the Grey 12 Pin J2 Molex.
IO3 Infotainment System
Access the Radio Module that sits behind the screen (Video Shown Here). Check for wires located in slots 4 and 5 of the Grey 20 Pin Molex.
IOB Infotainment System
Access The Radio Module that sits behind the touchscreen (Video Shown Here). Check for wires located in slots 14 and 15 of the Grey 20 Pin Molex.
We offer vehicle applications as a completely plug and play package for “Pre-wired” truck and a kit that requires 3 basic connections for the “Non Pre-wired” trucks:
If your vehicle is one of the many 2014 – 2018 vehicles that are pre-wired from the factory; just select our optional Pre-wired Harness above making this upgrade truly “Plug and Play”. If after inspecting your truck you realize that you are not pre-wired; no worries, we still have you covered. Just select Non Pre-wired Harness from the drop down and we’ll send you a camera kit that will require you to run the camera harness to the front of the vehicle and make connections in the cab. For an example of what’s involved in running the harness (See Video Shown Here). We have made changes to the connections shown in the video and the Relay is no longer used. It’s literally a 3 wire connection.
We have over 30 years experience with the GM product line and have been specializing in adding factory navigation systems and cameras for the last 13 years. We are now giving you the ability to add a genuine factory GM tailgate handle backup camera as well. This OEM GM tailgate handle camera has been designed by our engineers to fully integrate into your 2014 – 2018 GM Full Size Truck as if they were shipped from the factory equipped with a backup camera. Our tech support team provides up to 15 minutes of tech support to help guide you through the installation process. Don’t settle for anything less than factory equipment for your vehicle!
All of our systems come complete with everything you’ll need for your installation; including all harnessing, and installation videos (if available), and up to 15 minutes of technical support (VIA TEXT Message)!

PROGRAMMING OPTIONS
Infotainment System programming will be required to add reverse camera software (please select the right option for your vehicle in the drop down box above). For more info on determining if your vehicle is equipped with IOB, IO3, IO4, IO5, or IO6 please message us below in the MVI Chat Box.
Option 1: MVI Custom Camera Programmer- IO4, IO5 and IO6 Vehicles Only (Recommended)
Dealer programming or vehicle downtime is no longer required. We make the upgrade easy for you with our custom camera programmer. This is yours to keep and use as often as necessary while you own the vehicle (e.g. if software gets erased when vehicle is in for service). Make sure to visit our GM Custom Camera Programmer page for more info on the device.
Option 2: Send in Programming- IO4, IO5 and IO6 Vehicles Only
Send in your parts and have MVI add the camera software to your system and return them back to you (parts ship in 2-3 business from receipt). Please note your vehicle will not be drivable while the parts are out for programming.
Option 3: Pre-Programmed Module Swap- IOB and IO3 Vehicles Only. Please Note: 2017 2019 IOB vehicles now require a picture of the back of the touchscreen, as there are two types of camera systems. Please message us below, a picture of the back of your touch screen, to verify your camera type before ordering.
If your truck is equipped with the IO3 (BASE Work Truck Non MyLink) or 7″ IOB screen you will need to select “Send in current module / Exchange for pre-programmed module with camera software (includes return shipping) from the Programming Options Menu above. We will ship you pre-programmed modules for you to install into your vehicle and you will send your old parts back (within 48 hours). Please note: we will need a signed core form on file before parts are shipped. A MVI representative will email you your core form after order is placed.
REQUIREMENTS
- Professional installation recommended but not required
- VIN number required for programming prior to shipping (no dealer involvement necessary)
- Professional installation is recommended if you are not familiar with automotive electronics and installations. We do provide up to 15 minutes of BASIC installation support for customers that prefer to do the install on their own, for trouble shooting purposes ONLY. As a custom business, we are NOT able offer on-demand tech support. Tech support must be scheduled via TEXT MESSAGE only. For more info please view our Terms and Conditions.
- The Non Pre-Wired Trucks will be a bit more of an advanced install, so make sure you have watched the video shown above to make absolutely sure you are comfortable and capable of doing what’s involved, if you plan to do this install yourself.
